I don’t allow Emma to wear dangle or hoop earrings. She is allowed to wear stud type earrings. I just don’t want our dog or her brother or some friend getting caught on something that extends past her ear and ripping through it. It was one of our earring rules when I caved and let her get ears pierced for Christmas.
Emma went to cheerleading camp this week and one of the rules was that there was no jewelry including earrings. Any earrings. Emma yesterday asked if she could wear her studs even though she knew the rules. Cause you know, that’s what seven year old do… they test the limits. My job is to remind them of the limits and help them understand the boundaries right?
I was on my game dear readers. I was able to get that across and more!
I said “what are the rules Emma?” and she said “Well.. I think they said the rule because they don’t want people to wear dangle earrings and since I don’t wear dangle earrings, I think it would be ok to wear my studs”. To which I asked her, “Do you think anything could happen with the stud earrings?” She said she didn’t know. And I said, well maybe this is a time we need to just trust the people who are running the camp and why they put up the “no jewelry rule”. Maybe us understanding the reason “why” they did it isn’t that important… it’s just important that we follow the rule.
Let’s face it, it’s an important lesson.
And she got it. And we started talking about faith which was pretty dang cool. Not faith in a spiritual sense per se, but how faith is believing what you can not see and maybe not even understand. Sometimes faith is trusting that even though it doesn’t seem like it, sometimes adults know more then you do.
Wow. Wouldn’t it be cool if when she’s 15 she thinks back to this conversation? Ha.
Was it an “Ah-Ha” moment for my seven year old? I dunno. She she seemed to enjoy the thought provoking conversation. And lets face it – it was pretty cool to parlay earring talk into a discussion about faith.
