Maui Bound
Posted by Kym under General
I am blogging you while I am on hold. I am in the process of booking our romantic long weekend in Maui to celebrate 15 years of marriage. I can not wait to go! I’ve never been to Hawaii before and I am really looking forward to having time to reconnect with my husband sans kids! We are going to fly my mom and dad out here to watch the kiddos while we go have some fun.
So now we have to decide what we want to do for activities. I want to kayak and snorkel. Anyone have any advice on the best places on the island to snorkel? The idea of snorkeling with sea turtles appeals to me. And I think we want to either bike the volcano (if you don’t have to get up to early in the morning) or perhaps just take a helicopter tour of the volcano and call it good. And of course, we want to do a couple spa treatments.
Best deal I found was Costco Travel. So lay it on me readers.. Anyone have Maui advice?

So. Jealous.
Book an afternoon with one of the (many) boats that will run you out to Molokini for snorkeling. Lots of sea turtles and other cool aquatic life, out there. We took a glass-bottomed boat, so it was a fun ride out there, as well as a blast to dive once we were out.
Have a wonderful time!!

Oh wow!
We honeymooned on Maui. This was back in the days of horse-drawn carriages, but perhaps some things still apply.
1) snorkel: there are many boats (sailboats and others) that will take you out, when we were there you could choose half day, full day, etc. We went with another couple (whom we had not met previously) to save money and had an absolute blast. We didn’t go to the other island, just found a little cove and went snorkeling and everyone shared stories. Take some pineapple for after you swim, it was awesome and fresh.
2) biking the volcano: I think you’ll have to get up early; they truck you to the top and you ride down. We did the ’sunrise’ thing (not the bike ride, just went with our camera) but instead of going with a hotel group we drove our rental car so we could have freedom from schedules. I had a HORRID sinus headache, so if you’re prone to those you might take sudafed or something before going up. At sunrise there is a huge temperature difference at the top vs. the bottom - many people wrapped in blankets against the chill.
3) road to hana: absolutely gorgeous, could have spent several days on this part of the island. Waterfalls and beaches everywhere.
4) if you or hubby sunburn easily take extra care; the sun is more intense (closer to the equator) than what you are used to; my wife and I lobstered our first day and spent a little time recuperating in the condo. Which isn’t all bad, I got to spread aloe vera everywhere…
Lemme know if I can share anymore…

My husband and I went to Maui a year or two before we had kids for our anniversary and it was an unforgettable trip. Make sure you do the volcano thing. There is also a tour that meets at the top to watch the sunrise, which is what we did. We just drove up. Another really interesting trip is the Road to Hana, if you have a full day to explore. There are waterfalls, black sand beaches, and all kinds of discoverieson this trip. We did the snorkeling with the sea turtles and loved it.
Save some money to hit some of the AMAZING restaurants in Maui. The top chefs in the world live and work here and it is really evident when you find some of the really great spots to eat.
I haven’t traveled much in my life, so I rarely want to go back to a vacation spot because there are so many others I want to see. Maui is the one place I went where I wanted to go back before I even got home. I hope you have a great trip.

Our fvaorite restaurant there from our honeymoon days is apparently gone.
You’ve gottne good snorkeling advice so far; we also snorkeled in Wailea (south area) by some of the nicer hotels there. HAVE FUN!

Food advice?
Try the poi. A giant, steaming bowl of poi. Good stuff.
When we went all we could afford to eat was fast food and stuff from the grocery store (long story, but we were both unemployed at the time). It never hurts to ask around when you get there and see what’s recommended.
Also? 35mm SLR’s don’t like salt water. You don’t want to know how I learned this.
(just kidding about the poi, btw.)
