A thin sexy black number….
Posted by Kym under General
I have a cell phone that is still getting a discounted plan from a company I used to work for. What I love about this plan is that it has an almost nonexistent monthly fee. A fee you can’t get somewhere else. I’ve had it for years. And I will admit that there is a certain rush I get knowing I’m getting a deal. Still. And this plan works for me because I rarely use my cell phone. I just have it for safety reasons. So if I break down in the van with three kids in tow, I can call someone. I don’t give anyone my cell number.
However, my current cell phone sucks. It’s about 4 years old I think. The battery life is less then 6 hours. Needs a new one. I often have to pop the battery to reset the damn thing. Oh and I guess I should mention that the battery is held on by duct tape. And I think the software needs upgraded and there is no “verizon store” close by to upgrade it. So… I’m thinking I need to just suck it up and shell out the money for a new phone.
Why? Because I have to sell the house in Florida and I think I’m going to have people call my cell phone. I don’t want all those east coasters waking up the kids at 5:30am to ask me if my pool is southern exposure – know what I mean?
Ok so we have progress… we all agree Kym needs a new phone. Now we move into the realm of what Kym wants. And where Kym’s wants are bashed by the cold reality that she’s so damn cheap… it’s sucking the pleasure of buying right out of her.
*sigh*
I want one of those sexy thin Razor phones. And I found a deal where I could get it free. But the cell plans are EXPENSIVE! I am looking at switching to Cingular because I like the idea of rollover minutes (or maybe we should call it bendover minutes?). But it’s $40 a month. And a two-year contract. That’s almost a 1K commitment. Which would I rather have… a snazzy cell phone that wont wake up my kids or a $300 a night room in Whistler?
I won’t even talk about how I really want the snazzy Bluetooth enabled handsfree device too…. because certain folks could get ideas. (No Honey do NOT buy this for me for Christmas! Note to readers: I have to state that for the husband or he goes nuts when I mention I want some new piece of technology and can’t help himself by going and buying it for me).
I could go prepay I guess. But I know that I am going to use it heavily while I’m selling the house. And the rates are HIGH on those prepays. And I also think I could shave the 30 bucks a month I spend on long distance if I used my cell phone. And I’m also rationalizing that I should just think of it as part of the cost of selling the house. Right up there with childcare, plane fare, advertising….
So what to do?
Suck it up and figure this is 1K cost of doing business selling the house? Or just use my current piece of crap phone and make that work and then use the 1K to have some gorgeous cabana boy rub me down with warm oil instead?
Oh the decisions I face…..

Kym - if you can forgo the “sexy phone” desires, I would suggest rethinking the prepaid option. The house should sell in a month or two, no? Why get a two year contract for that? I use my phone like you do. So I got a nice, basic, prepaid flip phone with 1100+ minutes (that don’t expire for a year) for under $200 through T-mobile. (Picked it up at Target.) Works great, no monthly bill, no roaming, no commitment and (best of all) CHEAP!

If you want cheap and easy, I’d suggest buying a basic cell phone off eBay that supports your current cell phone carrier. The last one I bought was new in the box and under $50 with shipping.

I’m laughing. You put it so well. The “cheap” ruins the “buy”. Oh does it!
I just had a blind company come out and quote us for window blinds. The woman does a great job, convinces me to buy the most expensive ones and then tells me to cover 4 large bay windows and 3 small windows will cost me $7,900. I about choked. The shades cost 2/3rds the price of each window. Thank you, NOT!
She said look at it like furniture. I told her I couldn’t. I can resell furniture for years and get money back — but those blinds are worth nothing upon install!!!
Just the concept bothers me to no end!
I vote for an oil rub down LOL. Because you know the logic — if you wait another year — they’ll be an even better phone to buy and it’ll probably be 1/2 the price LOL — and all the more sweeter

I vote for one of the cheap options. A pay as you go phone (we have a tracfone) or an ebay find that you can use with your current plan. Oil rubdowns win in my book every time!
