Neuro Update

Yawn
I hate the whole time switching thing don’t you? I like to think of myself a bit more flexible then I really am I guess. It always takes a few days to adjust.
Friday we took Dinara for her Neurology assessment. That went well. I’ll get the final report in a month, but basically, they helped us to understand how Dinara learns best. It was very informative. Some of the interesting things we learned:
—- The brain stores memory in about 15 different places in the brain so if you figure out which places your brain accesses the most easily, you can use “techniques” to store information in those places and avoid the places that work at a deficit.
—- Dinara will remember things better if they are written in different color inks.
—- Children can only remember about 7 or 8 words max at a time in their “working” memories.
—- Brian is incredibly plastic between the ages of 7 and 10. We can “reroute” a bunch of things with different therapies.
—- By helping Dinara to do more processing in the long term memory we’ll free up her working memory to do more advanced tasks. Right now, much of the auditory processing is sucking up her working memory… so we need to work on getting that stuff more “automatic”.
I really learned a lot from these doctors. It was very interesting. I’m anxious to see what the “plan” will be to help Dinara exploit her strengths and reroute around her weaknesses.
Happy Belated Birthday to my daughter Emma who turned nine yesterday. I just can’t believe it’s been nine years since her birth. It seems like yesterday in so many ways. Time is really going fast.
Today I am fighting a cold or the flu. Something “hit me” last night and I just feel so blah today. The kids are off of school for the week, so I’m planning on just being lazy today. I have a sore throat, headache and I’m achy. I don’t feel like I’m full blown sick yet though…. So I’m hoping my body can fight it off.
